Jay Rodriguez: A Night in Verona

label, multi-instrumentalist, Hernan Jay Rodriguez revels in a musical
pool of freeform jazz expression in this expressive and experimental
project of eight tunes recorded live, outside of the studio, in
Verona, Italy. Jay and his trio –Ratzo B. Harris on bass and Victor
Jones on drums– are joined on four numbers by virtuoso pianist Chucho
Valdez rounding off this recording with one of his own compositions.
Soaring in, around and through the spaces between the music on both
sax and flute, Rodriguez’ artistic dichotomy is highlighted in this
wonderfully enjoyable, sensory enlightening, recorded experience.

Throughout this recording of their May 1999 performance, Rodriguez
demonstrates a gritty, angry sound on sax that is both punchy and
percussive. By contrast, his style on flute is gentle, lyrical, tender
and passionate, subliminally hinting of the late Herbie Mann.

The CD closes with a Valdez’ Latin-jazz composition brimming with
virtuosity from both pianist & flautist, or in this case, reed player
(Rodriguez). This final number leaves you feeling the heat and
excitement that was captured on that night in Italia. ¡Caliente!
