This is the band for you then. I saw them once and it was probably the
quietest show I ever caught. It was more like a chamber quartet than a rawk
& roll band. Which they aren't of course.
Teenage Fanclub is another act that impressed me with their sensible noise
levels. |

Neither. Just feeling like Bon Jovi in that quote from T. Hull's sig
line:
"If the Replacements are so great, how come I never heard of them?"
They're not to everybody's liking. |
The guy who does most of the vocals, Stephin Merritt, has an untrained deep
voice that not
everyone is wild about. Me, I find that he's a modern Cole Porter/Randy
Newman.
He's mangaged to write both some of the most touching/heartbreaking songs
that I've ever
heard, along some with a razor sharp wit. Also, some of their music sounds
as though it
was done with a Casio keyboard as the main instrument...it has a certain
charm...but, again,
it takes some getting used to (they also include some really eclectic
instruments on their albums).
Me, I first heard of them through a song of theirs that Arcade Fire covered,
called "Born on a Train."
It's a pretty incredible and spooky song.... Listening to them, you can tell
that they provided more than
a bit of inspiration to Win.... |

And doesn't he also have a hand in The Gothic Archies, too?
Yes. I have never heard them, though. I don't know which aspect of his
talents Merritt specifically channels with the Archies.
I've not even begun to dig and delve into those side projects...of those
side projects, which ones do you like best?
The 6ths. The Future Bible Heroes' sound has the same problems as some of
the early Magnetic Fields material for me. Thin sound, cheesy synths. Not
the best setting for Merritt's exquisite songwriting talents. But it seems
he's obsessed with The Human League and some of the other British new wave
bands that put away the guitar and incorporated Moroder (and maybe some
Eno) into their music. That's the sound he's striving for on these
records.
I've heard those earlier albums...and, yeah, a lo-fi Eno is an apt |
description.
Still, if the songs are solid and good, I think I'll eventually get hold of
those other
projects...but I appreciate the heads up on what to expect. |

I've read that this guy's hearing problems are such that he covers his ears |
in between songs when the applause starts (which might indicate how severe
the problem is). Hearing problems are a drag in any scenario...but even
worse when
one makes a living out of creating songs and sounds. |

Man, I stumbled upon them just within these past couple of years...
and have found them (or Stephin Merritt) to be a breath of fresh
air.
Remarkable songwriting.....
Merritt also has several interesting side projects. When he wants to
indulge his early Human League/electric disco side, he calls himself
The
Future Bible Heroes. And when he feels like not singing, he's The
6ths.
The album Hyacinths and Thistles boasts a wonderful array of guest
singers
(Bob Mould, Melanie, Odetta, Marc Almond, Sally Timms among them)
singing
vintage Merritt tunes. Highly recommended, after you've soaked in
those
69
Love Songs of course.
And doesn't he also have a hand in The Gothic Archies, too?

I've read that their live shows are unlike most concerts that are usually
given, and they
are somewhat more formal affairs, almost like a recital. Definitely
keeping an eye out
for when one of his project bands comes around. Even though all I've heard
are brief
samples from DISTORTION, I noticed the same thing...a lot of noise amidst
what sounded
like good songs. I'm gonna hold off on that one for a bit longer...will
most likely get "i" next.
I really do love HOLIDAY, THE CHARM OF THE HIGHWAY STRIP and GET LOST a
whole bunch
(especially the latter two).- Hide quoted text -

'"i" was PROPERLY recorded. SYNTHS are fine but not SYNTHS that sound
like plastic PENNYWHISTLES and those clickity 'drums'. there no reason
even on the cheap for it to sound so bad."
Yeah, the Casio sound took me some time to get used to...but the songs were
fine enough
that it didn't bother me near so much as time went on. Glad to read that
about "i"...will look
forward to getting hold of that one. |

I always dig coming across performers who are new or who've been around
for years...and finding
that they reawakens my interest in music all over again.
Same thing can be said about writers and film-makers, too...
Equally fun is coming back to someone whose work was much loved for many
years...and who sort of
fell off of the radar over the passing of time...Paul Simon has filled
that that slot for me in recent days.
Can't get enough of his stuff these days. That's the beauty of the

contact...the telephone rings or they show up at your doorstep, and you're

depth to the current friendship than there
was in the past.

I went on a Paul Simon kick about a month ago. Listened to him on the iPod
pretty much every day for about a week. Dasm, that guy has a lotta GREAT
stuff! I like how you described the relationship between a great artist &
the listener.

I don't know why this comes to mind, but I just got hold of The
Magnetic
Fields 69 LOVE SONGS...and haven't
had a chance to play these discs yet (want a chance to hear all
sixty-nine
songs at once).
I envy you as you have a great treat awaiting you. My mouth quite
literally
fell open the first time I heard "Papa Was a Rodeo".
That's the feeling I get....and I'm getting frustrated that the chance
hasn't arrived
to open this box-set. But, from all I've heard, this set of songs
sounds wonderful!
Yes--enjoy!
You also like The Magnetic Fields, professor??

Yeah, I like them/him a lot. And though I see it's gotten some lukewarm
reviews here in this thread, the latest ("Distortion") is one of my
favorites of 2008.
I should say, though, that I doubt I've listened to the full 69 all in a
row since the day I got it. But I'm always happy when it comes up on
iTunes.:)

We're on the same wavelength because just this month I listened to
_Graceland_ for the first time in maybe a decade. Wow, it's incredible.

That's the material that I've been really drawn to lately.
There are some powerful and majestic songs on that album
(much as I do love GRACELAND).
I sure hope that CONCERT IN THE PARK gets a DVD
release someday...I've seen footage from it, and with all those
drummers on the stage (plus the hundreds of thousands of people watching),
it looks pretty stunning. What's even more amazing is how musically rich
that live concert is (given its size, I'd have expected the music to take a
backseat
to the epic nature of the event). |
