Yeah, the Amorica tour had a lot of great shows. Maybe you got them on a
particularly stoned night. But that's what happens when you have a band that
doesn't stick to a scripted show. You get higher highs and lower lows. Too bad
you caught them on a bad night.
|
The Amorica tour is my favorite to listen to these days, also some of
the early '93 SHAMC tour shows are up there for me. |

Yep. When they performed it on that tour, it sounded like they were in a rage.
Pissed off. They mellowed a little for Amorica, which lead to great things, but
did take a little of the edge off of NSNS. |

I'm seeing them at the end of August at the MN State Fair with the Black

shows have looked really good on paper so I'm getting excited for the
show, it looks like they are doing more than just SHAMC/Warpaint songs
finally.
I'd be fine if they ONLY did those albums in their entirety.
I've been seeing them since the SHAMC tour and have heard those songs enough
live, I want to hear some different stuff. They are great songs but they have
a lot of other really good songs that could be played instead of the 1,000
airing of Thorn In My Pride.

I haven't been paying attention to the setlist recently, but I took a look at
the last few shows, and there was only 1 Southern Harmony track at each show. I
think the last set I saw had 1 SYMM, 1 SH, 2 Amorica, and a lot of new stuff. So
that's pretty cool. |

I'm seeing the Crowes tonight, I'm hoping for a good mix of old songs
plus a healthy dose of new songs as I haven't seen them since Warpaint
came out. Should be interesting as the Crowes are playing the MN State
Fair, its an outdoor venue that holds about 14,000 not sure how many
will be there as they usually play theaters when they come through. |

Hope it was good. Their festival sets sometimes are a let down. I've got a
friend in Burnsville who goes to most of the Crowes shows in your area, and she
went to the fair one with a friend. Not sure if she's gonna do the Orpheum one
later this year or not. That would probably be a better show. |

When are they playing the Orpheum? I haven't seen anything about that.
The show was good, not great. Lots of songs I hadn't heard before which
was nice, the keys solo in Wiser Time was pretty bad but thankfully
Luther took over and helped save the song. I dug that song Quinn the
Eskimo, hadn't heard it before. I'll be honest that a lot of the crowd
was lost as they didn't know most of the songs, some guy behind me kept
yelling "play the popular stuff", I'm glad they didn't! I think the last
six times I've seen them they've done Thorn, I like the song but I was
really hoping for Morning Song this time. Nice outdoor venue and it was
a perfect night for some good tunes.

Quinn The Eskimo is a Bob Dylan song with a chorus that goes "Come on
without....Come on within...you've not seen nothin' like the mighty
Quinn...".
Looks like with Girl From the North County, they did two Dylan's in a row.

Thats pretty cool, I'd like to see them at First Ave again, saw them
there on the '98 small venue tour, the first with Audley. Also the day
before my birthday.
Quinn the Eskimo as already posted done by Dylan, I thought that song
went over better than Girl From the North Country. |

Black Crowes deliver authentic '70s rock
By Rob Hubbard
Special to the Pioneer Press
Article Last Updated: 08/30/2008 11:41:36 PM CDT
A time capsule was unearthed at the State Fair on Saturday night. And
those doing the digging were the Black Crowes.
If anyone born after 1975 wanted to know what rock shows were like in
the early '70s, then the State Fair Grandstand was their portal to the
past on Saturday night. Atlanta's Black Crowes are the consummate
throwback, a band that mainlines the roots of the rock of that era, like
the blues and vintage rock 'n' roll that the Rolling Stones based their
style on and Led Zeppelin later encased in metal.
But they're also among those who have inherited the Grateful Dead's fan
base, thanks to their long-form jamming. It may sound like an unlikely
hybrid, but this band more than pulls it off. In fact, they delivered
what may have been the best pure rock 'n' roll show the Grandstand has
hosted in quite some time.
Since the Dead broke up, their denizens have dispersed in multiple
directions. But, if a good hunk of the heirs to that itinerant aesthetic
climbed aboard the Black Crowes' 90-city tour, then Saturday's show says
they made a fine choice. The band may be immersed in the same blues
tradition as their fellow Georgians, the Allman Brothers Band, but
they're not nearly as dauntingly intense. It's as if their musical slice
of an era is precisely targeted to postdate the anger inspired by the
Vietnam War and the burning cities of '68.
No, this is music about exhilaration and abandon, relaxed but never
aloof. And it takes listeners on a joyous journey.
Easing the audience into their set with a slow-building jam of recent
vintage, "Movin' On Down the Line," they set the smoke of incense afloat
across the blacktop before them. But they soon were unweaving their
absorbing style courtesy of a 20-minute jam on 1992's "Thorn in My Pride."
Just as the bands they built themselves around had a relationship at
their core — the Stones' Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Led Zeppelin's
guitar-drum conflagration of Jimmy Page and John Bonham — the Black
Crowes have the brothers Robinson at their center: singer Chris and
guitarist Rich. The conflicts of their earlier years seem to have
dissipated with age. They now are palpably excited about their
collaboration, perhaps recognizing that life's too short to not enjoy
this opportunity.
A cross-generational crowd of 4,625 left exchanging comparisons of
similar musical experiences. The youngest among them may have spoken of
their favorite current jam bands, but older patrons were overheard
discussing an old Faces show at Bloomington's long-gone Met Center. And
the consensus was that, if you weren't there, well, this was pretty darn
close.

"Performance Today."
Covers salvage messy, ego-driven set as Black Crowes get upstaged by opener
Chris and Rich Robinson didn't find much harmony at the fair, but
openers the Black Keys were grand.
By CHRIS RIEMENSCHNEIDER, Star Tribune
Last update: September 1, 2008 - 12:09 AM
Except for Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home" companionship a night
earlier, the most Minnesota-centric moment at State Fair grandstand
stage this year had to be when the Black Crowes pulled Bob Dylan's "Girl
From the North Country" out of its hippie-fringe sleeves on Saturday night.
Well into a meandering two-hour set, "Girl" was played in an
understated, down-homey fashion -- truly Minnesotan. It was one of the
rare occasions when the band's forever-feuding brothers Chris and Rich
Robinson were in genuine harmony.
Otherwise, a lot of Saturday's concert came off like a Stones-style
standoff of egos, and not just the Robinsons'. Longtime Crowes drummer
Steve Gorman and new keyboardist Adam MacDougall each ate up ample time
in the spotlight, while new guitarist Luther Dickinson -- recruited from
his great blues-stomp band the North Mississippi Allstars -- subtly
outshined them all.
The band's set list picked heavily from its new album, "Warpaint," a
decision that felt a little conceited by show's end. The material proved
fine at first with the opening gems "Movin' on Down the Line" and
"Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution," powerful, psychedelic
soul-rockers buoyed by Chris' solid voice. But the crowd of 4,625 seemed
less impressed as the band dug into deeper "Warpaint" cuts. Only a few
of the Crowes' memorable oldies showed up, including "Thorn in My Side"
in a bloated 10-minute jam.
The band rebounded with four more cover songs and culminated with a
rousing encore of the Band's "Baby Don't You Do It."
The opening act, the Black Keys, went a lot further with a lot less.
Just two guys playing a guitar and drums for 45 minutes, the Ohio
blues-rockers roused the crowd with fiery rockers such as "10 A.M.
Automatic" and "Thickfreakness," but really won fans over with the
grittier but stormier "Stack Shot Billy" and "I Got Mine."

IIRC it was Rich, I don't think Luther sang anything. I just downloaded
the show from bt.etree so I'll check it out again. Don't Do it was a
nice closer, although I did hope they'd get two songs in for the encore. |
