Every record seems to have at least one cheesy filler song, and for
that album it was "Heavy Fuel". I guess the guys thought they could
slide by with "Heavy Fuel" because they knew they had a big hit with
"Money For Nothing", but jeez guys...couldn't you have come up with
something better than that?
They even borrowed a few riffs from "Money For Nothing" on "Heavy Fuel"
which further demonstrated their lack of creativity and lack of
imagination.

While it is no Telegraph Road, it is entertaining.

I thought I had read it was jibe at the Heavy Metal scene. In listening to
the lyrics (as the character sings them) they are bloated and silly
sounding......like hair bands truly display them to be.
So my thoughts: No it is not a Telegraph but it is a great joust at the
whole metal/hair scene.

You're right - not a great song, but not as bad as Calling Elvis - I always
skip that song. |

My favorite songs off that album are How Long and When It Comes to
You....heavy fuel was a blatant attempt to create a "single" with a "goofy
video"....kinda like The Bug, but more shameless.
Money for Nothing was the worst thing to happen to Knopfler, 'cause now,
every album has one radio-ready "single" that is made to be a hit. Look at
the last 3 solo albums (all of which I LOVE) - which songs don't flow with
the themes of the albums? What It Is, Why Aye Man, and Boom Like That.
Doesn't even matter what the song says, it's all about "the hook".
but whatever. they're still decent songs, and at least he's not using
Calling Elvis to lead off his concerts anymore. I have NO idea why he
traded "Once Upon a Time in The West" for that.....

Look up the word satire in the next dictionary you get access to...borrowed,
begged or stolen...it came from their own material. DS's unique and original
sound flows with rhythm, tempo and melody in exacting harmony for my tastes.
They'll always have my attention.
