It's fine on the studio album...but live it was just downright
transcendental.
With audio-only it loses a bit (the Fillmore's light show while this song
was
being played was mind-blowing). But,even without the visuals, it's a fine
way to pass a quarter of an hour:

I love that song. Nice version live too! If only Bruce could play with a
band that sounded nearly that good.

And they'd only had a short amount of time to make that record and rehearse

for the tour.
However, since three of the five are Petty, Mike Campbell and Benmon Tench,
I'm inclined
to think that they could do anything they put their mind to with stellar
results.
But even with the short time they (Mudcrutch) had, they sounded
super-tight...and made
the E Street Band of this past decade sound downright sloppy by comparison.

It doesn't sound all that much like Tom Petty's albums from the last
twenty-some years, production
wizardry is kept to a minimum on this one.

My last Petty purchase before this one was 20 years or more ago, Hard
Promises I think it's called, so I don't know much about what came in
between. But the production on Mudcrutch is pretty basic. Clean sounding,
the way I usually like it. The kind of production that you don't notice;
it's all about the music. The way I wish Bruce would have an album produced
(but I suppose he never will). It's a good record, nothing great, but very
nice. There are also 2 or 3 songs on it sung by other Mudcrutch band
members.

Man, ain't that the sad pravda. By 1980-81, the E Streeters were the
tightest band in the land. Even losing Steve and inserting Nils they were
still very tight in 84-85 and '88. I keep waiting for em to get back to at

Nowadays it pretty much sounds like the same boom-boom-boom-boom pace &

That's pretty much my take on it...it's an enjoyable album to spin.

It's no great masterpiece, but makes for fine music to have playing during a
BBQ.
The stuff on the album sounds a whole lot better in a live setting.
Still, it's an album that ought to hold up pretty well over the years...

Sorry to respond late, but recent reading at RMAS caused a need for a 3-day
Usenet vacation! It happens.

"some recent items of interst that are in CURRENT ROTATION:

RODRIGUEZ - COLD FACT still in heavy rotation a 1000000 percent

That one's coming up in my rotation in about a week or two.

"SOLOMON BURKE the BELL SESSIONS -one of his best"

I may have to check that one out. I'm liking "Like A Fire" a bit more with
repeated listens, but it's not great.

"TIM HARDIN 3, the live one and his best, the long forgotten SUPER
TALENT!"

I like Tim Hardin, but only have a live boot or two. Wasn't he the first act
at the Woodstock? I always thought it was a trip that he wrote "If I Were A
Carpenter" and Bobby Darin had a hit with it, while Darin wrote "Sing A
Simple Song Of Freedom" which Hardin had a hit with.
.
"NRBQ DUMMY sadly their last cd, would love to have em
get back together again"

Like what I've heard, but haven't heard enough. Another one of those old
bands that I somehow missed in their heyday.
.
My listening of late not nearly as interesting as yours or Mystic's, but
here goes:

Anne Hampton Callaway --- "Easy Living" - One of my favorite jazz singers..
Unique voice, insane range.

North Mississippi All-Stars --- "Hernando" - the new one. Nothing great, but
very solid as always.

Calexico --- "Feast Of Wire" - My favorite Calexico live show is from this
year, 2003, so I thought I'd buy the record. Good stuff, very moody as
usual, but I've come to the conclusion that this band is much better
sounding in live appearances than in the studio. Which is not a bad thing..

Counting Crows --- "This Desert Life" - Fine fine 3rd album with some of
their better tunes. Not a bad song on it.

Jackson Browne --- 1986 live at Shoreline Amphitheater boot, SBD. Good
stuff, playing mostly his more well-known numbers with a band.

Los Lonely Boys --- 2007 live boot. I don't care what anyone says, these
guys are excellent.

Grateful Dead --- late in December 1969 live boot. Interesting period, sort
of the transition era from psychedelic music to the more rootsy Workingman's
Dead music. Altamont had only happened barely over a month earlier, yet they
were already performing "New Speedway Boogie".

Tower Of Power --- Fillmore West, July 1971 boot. The last night of music
there, they opened for Creedence and Santana. Great great soul/funk band
from the East Bay, their first and best incarnation with the late great Rick
Stevens on vocals. Outstanding performance.

Neville Bros.--- Mardi Gras New Orleans 1990. Nice FM recording. This band
could sure kick some ass, and they don't disappoint here. All their hits and
more.

TIM HARDIN was supposed to open up one of the WOODSTOCK days but
found himself "UNDER THE WEATHER" and unable to go on until later and
then i think he only did a couple of songs. how he managed to even go
onstage was somethin unexpected!!! amazin he made it. that groupe
OKKERVILL RIVER (sp) have greatly INFLUENCE by him. a great waste, TIM
HARDIN!

i like CALEXICO but pass on the LONELY BOYS, they are like a blues
band. loved the early TOWER OF POWER.

aslo been listenin to BAND ON THE RUN, probably the best album made by
an BEATLE on his own, and better that most BEATLE records.
i was tryin to listen to REVOLVER cd and had to stop, that stuff was
meant to be heard in mono, the stero is unlistenable. frankly ive yet
to understand the big ado about the EMI studio, the stuff recorded
there sounds terrible today. old bob dylan records sound more together
and thats sayin somethin!

They are, they got a fine guitarist, but I know not the type of music you

"aslo been listenin to BAND ON THE RUN, probably the best album made by

It's close to a masterpiece. He never even approached that level after that.

and thats  sayin somethin!"

Funny, just yesterday I was listening to a disc I'd made years ago in the
Napster days, a compilation of Top Ten songs from July thru November 1964
that I put together. The Beatles had 3 songs on there: "Hard Day's Night";
"I Should Have Known Better"; and "I Feel Fine". I don't know if they were
recorded at EMI or what, but it was so easy to notice that the Beatles'
songs on there were far superior, as far as production values and clearness
of sound, to any of the 28 or so other songs by other artists from the same
5 month period in 1964. I was amazed, it really stood out!
Now, it could be that possibly the Beatles' songs I glommed for the
compilation had been remastered, while the others possibly hadn't. And I
didn't put any Dylan on there, so I couldn't compare him. But to my ears,
the Fab Four had production that was at least among the best for the time,
head and shoulders above most; I think that must have had something to do
with their amazing success too.

it must have been MONO that you got from the NAPSTER, i was listenin
to one of my favoirte BEATLES numbers HERE THERE and EVERYWHERE on the
IPODS and i cold stand it no more, voices on one channel then the
instruments on the other with some phasin that must have took 10
minutes to do, ill go with the LP mono on them.
